What Are the U.S. Navy Ranks?

The U.S. Navy pay grade chart is divided into two distinct areas. The enlisted ranks and the officers each have a selection of ranks that include increased responsibility — along with increased pay. Check out this guide to the U.S. Navy ranks to learn more about their order.

Navy Officer Ranks

Navy officer ranks are divided into orders that include commissioned and non-commissioned officers. Commissioned officers are always commissioned by the President of the United States. The first commissioned rank in the Navy is the Warrant Officer. This person has enlisted in the Navy and achieved a minimum of 13 years of service. The Warrant Officer ranking is divided into five sections from CWO2 to CWO5. The Chief Warrant Officer 2 is most junior of all of the Navy's commissioned ranks.

Commissioned Officer Ranks Following Graduation from the USNA, NROTC or OCS

The Ensign 1 is the first official rank that's held by a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Officer Candidate School or the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps. Lieutenant Junior Grade 2 follows the Ensign 1 designation. After Lieutenant Junior Grade 2, follow Lieutenant 3, Lieutenant Commander and Commander. A Commander is a senior Naval officer who commands a SEAL team, a Frigate or a Destroyer among other smaller vessels. Captains are ranked higher than Commanders and are in command of larger vessels including Navy aircraft carriers and Destroyer Squadrons.

Commissioned Officers - Naval Admirals

Navy Admirals begin with the Rear Admiral - Lower Half. This is a one-star rank that includes at-sea commands like Carrier-Cruiser Groups. The Rear Admiral is outranked by the two-star Rear Admiral-Upper Half. This person commands Carrier or Expeditionary Strike Groups along with Carrier-Cruiser Groups and is offered larger command opportunities. The Vice Admiral and Admiral are ranked higher than the Rear Admirals at three stars and four stars, respectively. Enlisted Ranks Explained
